Notes on Financial Accounting

Assalamualaikum.

Here is the link to the notes on Financial Accounting. Tutorial questions will be taken from PYQs. So, please print them out and bring it during classes. I have seen students who did not print out the notes and tutorial questions and in the end, have to share them in classes. I consider this to be very in appropriate. I have made the materials available by putting much effort but you seem to not appreciate it. Please, to those students who did that, please change your attitude. Don't let me say this thing twice.

Course Synopsis
           
This course is designed to expose students in the final year of the program on the application and the interaction of the various accounting disciplines which include Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Finance, Accounting Information Systems, Taxation, and Audit in the activities of different types of business organization. The emphasis is more on how the different accounting activities are related to each other. It also focuses on how the integration of the different accounting activities contributes in the support of the day-to-day operations, in the decision-making process and in the reporting of financial results to the stakeholders.

Course Objectives

1.      To relate how the Accounting Information Systems (AIS) fit into the business environment.
2.      To recognize and apply the various accounting functions in a business entity.
3.      To be able to take a holistic view of how different functions and disciplines interact and affect the Accounting Information Systems.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1.      differentiate the different forms of business;
2.      explain how the Accounting Information Systems (AIS) fit into the management information system (MIS);
3.      understand and differentiate between Financial Accounting and Management Accounting models/functions;
4.      apply the degree of overlaps between the accounting information systems and their various sub-systems;
5.      get an overview of the nature of the accounting transaction processing cycles;
6.      understand how the recording of the transactions and financial reporting cycle work;
7.      prepare the different types of reports as a means of communicating to management;
8.      comprehend and apply the nature, purposes and how transactions/activities from the taxation discipline impact the Accounting Information Systems;
9.      comprehend and apply the nature, purposes and how transactions/activities from the finance discipline impact the Accounting Information Systems;
10.  comprehend and apply the nature, purposes and how transactions/activities from the auditing discipline impact the Accounting Information Systems;
11.  take a holistic view of how different functions and disciplines interact and affect the Accounting Information Systems;
12.  work in a team.
